Severe symptoms and overwhelming physical limitations eventually led to a life-changing diagnosis: lupus. The chronic autoimmune disease forced Judy to leave nursing and brought her professional life to an abrupt stop.

For nearly a decade, she remained outside the workforce with no guarantee that she would ever return.

But Judy’s story did not end with her diagnosis.

Her health challenges, trauma, and years of uncertainty eventually led to remarkable success. She went from being physically unable to work to becoming the CEO of an ambulatory outpatient surgery center. She later entered real estate, became an author, and discovered a new calling as an inspirational Christian speaker.

Judy B-Armstrong is the guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. During the interview, she discusses losing her nursing career, rebuilding her identity, and relying on faith when her future appeared uncertain.

Her message is simple but powerful:

“Never give up, because God is still writing your story.”

A Lupus Diagnosis Changed Everything

Judy was working as a registered nurse when her health began deteriorating.

At first, she did not have a clear explanation for what was happening to her body. As her symptoms intensified, it became increasingly difficult to perform the physically demanding responsibilities of nursing.

Doctors eventually diagnosed her with lupus.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue. Symptoms can include extreme fatigue, joint pain, inflammation, and damage to different organs or parts of the body.

The severity varies from person to person, but Judy’s physical limitations became impossible to ignore.

She could no longer continue working as a nurse.

Losing a career can affect much more than income. It can disrupt a person’s independence, confidence, identity, relationships, and sense of purpose.

For Judy, nursing was not merely a job. It represented her education, service, professional identity, and desire to care for others.

She had spent years helping patients face their medical challenges. Now she was confronting an illness she could not simply treat, ignore, or work through.

“The lupus diagnosis ended my nursing career, but it did not end my ability to make a difference.”

At the time, Judy could not see where this painful new path would eventually lead.

Nearly 10 Years Away From the Workforce

Judy became a stay-at-home mother and remained outside the workforce for almost a decade.

What began as a medical necessity became a long and uncertain season of waiting. Her body had imposed limitations she never expected, and there was no guarantee that she would ever return to a professional career.

Those years required extraordinary patience, resilience, and faith.

Judy could not control everything happening to her body, but she could decide how she used the time in front of her.

Rather than completely disconnecting from healthcare, she continued following developments in nursing and medicine. She stayed informed about the profession that had once played such a significant role in her life.

Judy also began reading books and listening to recordings from some of the leading motivational speakers of the time. Their lessons about attitude, perseverance, purpose, and personal growth helped protect her mindset during one of the most difficult periods of her life.

Long before Judy became an inspirational speaker herself, she was learning how words could restore hope.

“Sometimes the waiting season is not wasted time. It may be the season when God is preparing you for something you cannot see yet.”

Her body had slowed her down, but her mind remained active.

She continued learning, listening, and believing that her life still had meaning, even when she could not see what the next chapter would look like.

From Unemployment to Healthcare CEO

After nearly 10 years away from the workforce, Judy received an opportunity few people could have predicted.

She was hired as the CEO of an ambulatory outpatient surgery center.

The transformation was extraordinary.

Judy went from being unable to work because of lupus to helping lead a healthcare organization. Her nursing background gave her valuable knowledge of patient care and the medical profession.

Her years of studying motivational leaders strengthened her communication and leadership abilities. Her experience living with a chronic illness also gave her a perspective that could never be learned from a textbook.

She understood healthcare from both sides, as a registered nurse and as a patient.

“Every experience had taught me something. Even the painful chapters were preparing me for the next opportunity.”

Judy’s return to healthcare did not resemble the future she had originally imagined.

She did not return to bedside nursing. Instead, she returned as an executive responsible for helping guide an entire surgical center.

What once appeared to be a decade of professional inactivity had quietly become a season of preparation.

Starting Over in Real Estate

Judy built a successful career as the CEO of the surgery center, but her journey of reinvention was not finished.

She eventually left healthcare administration and entered real estate sales.

Once again, Judy found herself beginning a new career.

Real estate required marketing, networking, sales, negotiation, and the ability to build trust with clients. Judy soon discovered that she was not starting from nothing.

Her nursing career had taught her how to listen, communicate clearly, recognize people’s concerns, and remain calm during stressful situations.

Her experience as a healthcare executive had strengthened her leadership, organization, and decision-making abilities.

Her personal struggles also helped her connect with people navigating major transitions in their own lives.

Today, Judy works as a Realtor in San Luis Obispo County, California. She understands that buying or selling a home is rarely just a financial transaction.

A home can represent a new beginning, a painful ending, a growing family, a personal loss, or a defining turning point.

“Starting over does not mean that everything before it was a failure. It means you are carrying those lessons into a new chapter.”

Judy’s journey from nursing to healthcare leadership and then real estate demonstrates that a meaningful career does not need to follow a straight line.

Turning Trials Into Testimonies

Judy’s experiences eventually led her to another calling: inspirational Christian speaking.

Today, she shares a story shaped by chronic illness, trauma, heartbreak, resilience, humor, grace, and faith. She speaks at churches, retreats, conferences, banquets, networking events, community gatherings, and special-interest groups.

Her message centers on trusting God through life’s storms and refusing to believe that difficult circumstances represent the end of the story.

“God’s faithfulness can turn trials into testimonies. What feels like an ending may actually become the beginning of something you never expected.”

Judy does not speak about resilience as an abstract concept.

She has experienced the fear of declining health, the grief of losing a career, the frustration of physical limitations, and the uncertainty of spending years outside the workforce.

She also understands what it means to return, rebuild, and take another risk.

Her presentations combine faith, authenticity, transparency, and humor. She encourages audiences to trust God during periods of waiting, believe their lives still have value, and move forward with renewed strength.

The Hidden Trauma of Losing a Career

A forced career change can create a form of grief that other people may never recognize.

The person does not merely lose a paycheck. They may also lose daily routines, professional relationships, independence, confidence, and an identity built over many years.

For Judy, nursing represented education, personal sacrifice, service, and achievement. Lupus took that career away before she was prepared to leave it.

That trauma could have convinced her that her most productive years were behind her.

Instead, it eventually became part of the story she now uses to encourage others.

Her experience offers important lessons for anyone facing chronic illness, an unexpected career change, or a prolonged period of uncertainty:

  • A medical diagnosis may change a person’s plans without eliminating their purpose.
  • Time away from work can still be used for learning and personal growth.
  • Skills developed in one career can create opportunities in another.
  • Starting over does not mean starting from nothing.
  • An unexpected detour may prepare someone for a role they never imagined.
  • Success may arrive in a completely different form than expected.

Judy’s journey shows that limitations can redirect a life without destroying its value.

Finding Faith Through Life’s Storms

Judy is also the author of the ebook Faith Through Storms: How to Anchor Your Faith When Life Falls Apart.

The title reflects the central lesson of her journey.

She did not choose lupus. She did not plan to leave nursing or spend almost a decade outside the workforce. She could not have predicted that she would become a healthcare CEO, enter real estate, write a book, or speak to audiences about resilience and faith.

Those opportunities emerged after one chapter of her life appeared to have closed permanently.

Today, Judy B-Armstrong is an inspirational Christian speaker, registered nurse, Realtor, author, and mentor.

Her story reminds people that success is not always defined by avoiding hardship.

Sometimes, success is defined by what a person builds after hardship changes everything.

“Never give up. God is still writing your story.”
