His police partner, a rookie he was training, was gone in an instant. The sight of the young officer’s lifeless body broke something deep inside Fisher. Years of accumulated strain from law enforcement and military service had already taken their toll, but this tragedy became the breaking point. His marriage began to crumble, and Fisher turned to alcohol and other destructive habits to numb the overwhelming pain.
“I didn’t know how to cope,” he later admitted on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. “It felt like there was no way out.”
The darkness intensified until one desperate night when Fisher nearly ended his life. The only reason he survived? His handgun jammed. That mechanical failure, he says, granted him a second chance he never anticipated.
Finding Hope in the Unlikeliest Place: Horses
That second chance arrived in an unexpected form, equine therapy. Introduced to horse care by a new girlfriend, Fisher was initially skeptical. What could these powerful animals possibly offer a broken former cop?
But horses, he discovered, are profoundly different. They don’t judge. They sense human emotions in ways people often cannot. When Fisher was angry or agitated, the horses pulled away. When he finally calmed down, they drew closer, mirroring his inner state and forcing him to confront what he had been avoiding.
“At first, I didn’t understand it,” he shared during the podcast episode. “But the horses taught me to breathe again. They helped me rebuild patience, trust, and emotional resilience.”
Through consistent interaction with the horses, Fisher rediscovered a sense of purpose. Today, he shares his story widely to inspire other first responders and veterans battling PTSD. If horses could pull him back from the brink, he believes they can do the same for anyone.
The Science Behind the Magic of Equine Therapy
It’s not just a personal anecdote, equine-assisted therapy (EAT) is supported by robust scientific research, particularly for PTSD and depression.
Studies from Columbia University’s Man O’ War Project, led by Drs. Yuval Neria and Prudence Fisher, demonstrate that working with horses can significantly reduce symptoms in veterans. Dr. Neria explains the powerful connection:
“Both PTSD patients and horses are preoccupied with ongoing concerns about trust and safety. This innovative therapy facilitates bonding, overcoming fear, and re-establishing confidence. One must build trust with a horse for it to warm to you.”
Additional research shows long-term improvements in emotional regulation, self-esteem, and overall well-being. For trauma survivors, the horses’ mirror-like response to human emotion can be transformative.
Key Benefits of Equine Therapy for PTSD:
Reduced symptoms: Fewer flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance.
Improved emotional regulation: A non-judgmental space to process feelings.
Increased self-esteem and confidence: Caring for a horse restores purpose.
Enhanced social connection: Builds trust and communication skills.
Mindfulness and grounding: Promotes calm and present-moment focus.
Turning Pain into a Mission
For Fisher, recovery has evolved beyond the personal, it has become his life’s calling.
“I thought my life was over,” he reflects. “Now, every day I get to help others find the same peace I found through horses.”
Through podcast appearances, community outreach, and advocacy, Fisher is on a mission to prove that seeking help is not weakness, it’s courage. Trauma recovery is possible, and equine therapy is a proven, life-saving tool.
