Both detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, they were met with unexpected violence during a confrontation.

The Incident

The detectives were investigating a report of alleged child abuse. According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, the situation escalated, and a 15-minute gun battle ensued. Perez was shot twice, and Johnson was also injured. A SWAT officer risked his life to pull the wounded detectives to safety.

Perez underwent extensive surgery and rehabilitation. He was eventually forced to retire due to his injuries and PTSD. Despite this, Perez has spoken publicly about the incident, sharing his story of survival and faith.
