West Palm Beach, Fl - On a quiet day in Lakeside, California, a routine investigation turned into a life-threatening situation for Detective Ali Perez and Sergeant Craig Johnson. Both detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, they were met with unexpected violence during a confrontation.

The Incident

The detectives were investigating a report of alleged child abuse. According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, the situation escalated, and a 15-minute gun battle ensued. Perez was shot twice, and Johnson was also injured. A SWAT officer risked his life to pull the wounded detectives to safety.
