The Unseen Scars of Childhood Trauma: A Police Lieutenant's Journey
West Palm Beach, Fl - Retired Police Lieutenant Clint Thompson's storied career has taken him across continents and crises, from serving as a UHAPD Police Department officer to advising on a United Nations Police Mission and serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Yet, it's not the high-profile operations or global missions that linger most vividly in his memory, it's the children who endured abuse and neglect.

Witness to Humanity's Darkest Moments
Thompson recalls the devastation of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the horrors of war. However, the quiet tragedies unfolding in living rooms and behind closed doors left a deeper mark. Cases involving children subjected to unimaginable cruelty and neglect continue to haunt him.
The Cases That Changed Him
One case that stands out involved four siblings who suffered relentless physical and sexual abuse. Thompson remembers the resilience of these children, despite being broken down by their experiences. Another case involved a child removed from a dangerous home, filthy and lice-infested, who was given a teddy bear and clean clothes, a small gesture that told them, "You matter. You're safe now."
The Reality of Abuse and Neglect
Abuse can take many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, and medical abuse, as well as neglect. These Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can cause lifelong damage to mental and physical health. According to experts, an estimated 600,000 children in the US were victims of abuse in 2021, and 1,820 children died as a result of abuse and neglect.
From Police Work to Advocacy
Thompson's experiences led him to co-found 401-Kids Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to fighting child abuse through prevention, education, and compassion. The organization equips children in crisis with essentials and partners with law enforcement, hospitals, and advocacy centers to train professionals in identifying abuse and sex trafficking.
Using Media to Raise Awareness
Thompson uses media platforms to spread awareness about child abuse and neglect. Through the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, as well as their social media, he shares stories of resilience and survival, aiming to make sure no child feels forgotten.
A Lifelong Commitment
The effects of abuse and neglect have shaped Thompson's view of policing, service, and humanity. His experiences have pushed him toward a new mission, helping kids. "Helping kids is not just what I do," Thompson says. "It's who I am now. And it's what 401-Kids is all about, help."
