Starting Out in Corrections

“Miami was unlike anything else,” Starkman recalled. “It was a war zone, and it demanded teamwork, strategy, and unwavering focus to make an impact.”

Working in this volatile environment, Starkman honed his skills in crisis management and leadership. These experiences on the frontlines of law enforcement gave him a deep understanding of collaboration and problem-solving, qualities he would carry into his next chapter.

A Love for Basketball Turns Into a Calling

Despite his intense career in law enforcement, Starkman always nurtured a passion for basketball. What began as a side pursuit soon transformed into a second career, as his natural leadership and mentorship abilities found a new outlet.

In 1997, he joined Broward College as an assistant women’s basketball coach. By 2001, he had taken over as head coach of the men’s basketball team. Under his leadership, the team achieved remarkable success, winning multiple conference championships and making five state tournament appearances.
