From Routine Patrol to a Life-Threatening Scenario

Not all days in law enforcement follow a predictable script. Early in their careers, Officers Steven Flowers and Dan Moore answered what appeared to be a routine disturbance call at a Greensboro boarding house. The situation escalated quickly. After arresting a disruptive individual, they learned he had been released on minimal bail.

Later that same day, another call came in from the same location. The officers, nearing the end of their shift, responded once again, only to face a harrowing scenario. As they arrived, the suspect opened fire. With their patrol car riddled with bullets, Flowers and Moore were pinned down in a standoff that lasted hours until SWAT arrived.

That day tested their limits and forged a bond that would remain unbroken through life’s challenges, even as the years brought unforeseen battles.

When Cancer Changed Everything

Years after that life-threatening day, another battle loomed—this time a deeply personal one. In June 2021, Captain Dan Moore was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic and liver cancer. Despite the devastating prognosis, Moore faced his illness with the same courage he exhibited in the line of duty.

For Captain Steven Flowers, witnessing his friend’s fight was both painful and inspiring. Moore’s unwavering spirit taught him profound lessons about resilience, integrity, and the value of every moment.

On December 27, 2021, Dan Moore passed away at home in Winston-Salem, surrounded by his family. His legacy, however, lives on—not just in the department he served so faithfully, but in the hearts of those he inspired.

A Career Defined by Excellence

Captain Dan Moore’s career is the kind of story that defines what it means to serve. Beginning as a firefighter in 1997, Moore transitioned to policing, excelling in diverse roles like fraud investigator, undercover detective, SWAT operator, and firearms instructor.

Known as a “student, teacher, and warrior-poet,” Moore’s influence extended beyond Greensboro, earning him national recognition as a speaker and trainer on topics like active shooter response and tactical communication.

Moore embodied the values of the Greensboro Police Department: honesty, accountability, and respect. His contributions set a gold standard, one that continues to guide the department’s 787 dedicated officers and staff.
